Hiilenmuodostuksen is the geological process by which carbon is converted into coal, a sedimentary rock formed from the remains of ancient plants. This process occurs over millions of years and involves several stages. Initially, plant material accumulates in swamps or bogs, where it is protected from decomposition by the lack of oxygen. Over time, this organic matter is buried and subjected to heat and pressure from overlying sediments, a process known as diagenesis.

As the temperature and pressure increase, the organic material undergoes a series of chemical and physical changes. The initial stage, known as peat, is a soft, spongy material composed of partially decayed plant matter. With further heating and pressure, peat transforms into lignite, a low-rank coal with a high moisture content. As conditions become more extreme, lignite is converted into bituminous coal, which has a higher carbon content and is harder and more brittle than lignite.

Finally, under the most extreme conditions, bituminous coal can be transformed into anthracite, the highest rank of coal. Anthracite is hard, black, and has a high carbon content, making it an excellent fuel source. The entire process of hiilenmuodostuksen can take tens of millions of years, and the resulting coal deposits are a valuable resource for energy production.
