High mobility in wireless communications refers to a condition where user equipment moves rapidly relative to the network, causing rapid changes in the radio channel, Doppler shifts, and frequent handovers. It is a central concern in scenarios where devices travel at high speeds, such as vehicles, trains, drones, and mobile users in dense urban areas.

Mobility is described by speed and the resulting channel coherence time. Higher speeds and higher carrier frequencies reduce coherence time and increase Doppler spread, making channel estimation and synchronization more challenging. For example, at a carrier frequency of a few gigahertz and speeds around 100 km/h, Doppler shifts can be on the order of hundreds of hertz, implying channel variations on the scale of milliseconds. This rapid variation affects link reliability, latency, and the accuracy of channel state information used for adaptive transmission.

Key challenges associated with high mobility include fast-changing channels, aging channel information, frequent handovers between cells, and the demands of directional communications such as millimeter-wave systems where beam tracking is crucial. Interference management during cell transitions and maintaining low-latency control signaling also pose difficulties.

Techniques to mitigate these effects include advanced channel estimation and tracking, Doppler-resilient modulation and coding, predictive scheduling, and network-assisted mobility management. Other approaches involve multi-connectivity or dual connectivity, fast handover procedures, and robust beam management with rapid beam tracking. Edge computing and proactive resource management can reduce latency and improve decision-making in high-mobility contexts.
