Higherpercentile is not a distinct mathematical object but a way to refer to the upper part of a data distribution using percentiles. In statistics, a percentile marks the value below which a given percentage of observations fall. Higher percentiles, such as the 75th, 90th, or 95th percentile, describe the upper tail of the distribution and are used to compare individuals or observations relative to a group.

Calculation methods for higher percentiles include the nearest-rank method and linear interpolation. In the nearest-rank method, the percentile p is assigned to the value at position ceil(p*n/100) in the sorted data. In linear interpolation, the position is L = p*(n+1)/100; if L is not an integer, the percentile value is interpolated between the surrounding data points. Different conventions yield slightly different results, especially for small samples.

Interpretation of higher percentiles emphasizes relative standing within a distribution. A value at the 90th percentile is greater than or equal to 90% of observations. Percentiles describe a distribution’s location and tail behavior and are less sensitive to extreme outliers than some other measures of central tendency.

Applications span multiple fields. In education, percentiles report test performance; in economics, they characterize income distributions; in health, growth charts use percentiles to track development; in technology, latency or performance benchmarks often report high-percentile values to reflect tail behavior.

Example: consider the data set 1 through 10. The 75th percentile by nearest-rank is the 8th value, which is 8. By linear interpolation, it is 8.25. The exact value depends on the chosen convention.
