A heteropolymeric substance is a polymer that contains more than one distinct type of monomer unit along its chain. This contrasts with a homopolymer, which is built from a single monomer species. The term is commonly used in polymer science and biopolymers.

Heteropolymers can have various architectures, including random copolymers, alternating copolymers, block copolymers, and graft copolymers, depending on how the monomers are arranged during polymerization. Natural examples include proteins, or heteropolypeptides, composed of different amino acids, and nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA, which use multiple nucleotide units.

The composition and sequence of monomers influence properties such as solubility, thermal behavior, mechanical strength, and biodegradability. This tunability makes heteropolymers useful in plastics, hydrogels, adhesives, coatings, and drug delivery systems.

Synthesis and characterization: heteropolymers form through copolymerization or sequence-defined polymerization using two or more monomers. Characterization methods include NMR, mass spectrometry, chromatography, and spectroscopy to determine composition, sequence distribution, and architecture.
