Hermovälittäjäainejärjestelmät, often translated as neurotransmitter systems, are the communication networks within the nervous system. These systems are responsible for transmitting signals between nerve cells, called neurons, and between neurons and other target cells such as muscle or gland cells. This transmission occurs at specialized junctions called synapses.

At a synapse, a presynaptic neuron releases chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between the neurons.
