Hereditära describes characteristics, traits, or conditions that are transmitted from parents to their offspring through genetic material. In biology, heredity is encoded mainly in DNA contained in chromosomes within the nucleus, and in some cases in mitochondrial DNA passed from mother to child. Genes influence a wide range of features, from physical attributes to disease susceptibility, though many traits are also shaped by environmental factors and interactions between multiple genes.

Inheritance can follow different patterns. Some conditions are autosomal dominant, where a single mutated allele can cause the trait or disease; others are autosomal recessive, requiring two defective alleles. Hereditary diseases arise from germline mutations present in reproductive cells and can be inherited from one generation to the next or arise de novo. Distinctions are often made between hereditary traits and congenital conditions, the latter of which may result from non-genetic factors present at birth. Modern genetics also recognizes more complex modes of inheritance, including polygenic traits influenced by many genes, mitochondrial inheritance, and phenomena such as genomic imprinting.

In medicine and biology, understanding heredity is essential for risk assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, and the development of personalized approaches to care. It also informs evolutionary biology, breeding programs, and studies of human diversity.
