A heraldist, also termed herald, is a practitioner or scholar of heraldry—the study and practice relating to armorial bearings, ceremonial insignia, and the regulatory frameworks that govern them. Heraldists may research the origins of arms, analyze heraldic symbols, preserve armorial records, or design new arms for individuals, corporations, or institutions.

Historically, heralds were officers of arms in royal or noble households. They prepared pedigrees, verified claims to arms, proclaimed royal messages, and managed armorial registers. In medieval Europe they also supervised tournaments, conducted genealogical inquiries, and enforced heraldic law.

In the contemporary world, heraldry is regulated by official heraldic authorities in many countries. Notable examples include the College of Arms in England and Wales and the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland; other nations have similar offices or registries. Heraldists may work within these institutions or as independent consultants.

Key skills include blazon, the formal language for describing arms; knowledge of tinctures, charges, supporters, crests, and mottos; and proficiency in design and historical research. A heraldist drafts arms, ensures compliance with applicable heraldic rules, and maintains archival records.

The field intersects with genealogy, museum work, and cultural heritage. Modern heraldists may advise families or organizations seeking armorial bearings, or contribute to scholarly and educational projects on heraldic history.
