Hemosiderineladen is a descriptive term used in histology and pathology to indicate the presence of hemosiderin within cells or tissues. Hemosiderin is an iron-storage complex found within cells, which is derived from the breakdown of hemoglobin. It appears as a golden-brown granular or crystalline pigment under microscopic examination.

The accumulation of hemosiderin is often a sign of increased iron stores in the body or of localized bleeding and subsequent phagocytosis of red blood cells by macrophages. When red blood cells age or are destroyed, their hemoglobin is broken down. The iron component of hemoglobin is then either transported for reuse or stored as ferritin or hemosiderin. Hemosiderin represents a more stable, less soluble form of iron storage compared to ferritin.

Conditions that can lead to hemosiderineladen tissues include various forms of anemia, particularly those involving increased red blood cell destruction (hemolytic anemias), or conditions where iron is over-absorbed or transfused excessively. Localized hemosiderin deposition can be seen in bruises or areas of old hemorrhage, where macrophages engulf and process the released hemoglobin. Chronic venous insufficiency can also lead to hemosiderin deposition in the lower extremities, causing skin discoloration. Pathologists use the presence of hemosiderin to help diagnose and understand the underlying causes of these conditions.
