Hemoptysis refers to the coughing up of blood or bloody mucus from the lungs. It can range in severity from small streaks of blood in sputum to massive, life-threatening hemorrhages. The source of the bleeding is typically the respiratory tract, including the bronchi or lung parenchyma.

The causes of hemoptysis are varied and can be broadly categorized. Infectious causes are common and include bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung abscesses. Bronchogenic carcinoma, or lung cancer, is another significant cause, particularly in older individuals with a history of smoking. Other causes include bronchiectasis, where airways become abnormally widened, and pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs. Less common causes include autoimmune diseases, trauma, and certain medications.

Diagnosis of hemoptysis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and investigations. These may include chest X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest, bronchoscopy (a procedure using a flexible tube to visualize the airways), and sputum analysis to identify infection. Blood tests may also be performed.

Treatment for hemoptysis depends on the underlying cause and the severity of bleeding. Mild cases may resolve spontaneously or with symptomatic treatment. For more significant bleeding, interventions may be necessary to stop the hemorrhage, such as bronchial artery embolization or surgery. Management of the underlying condition is crucial to prevent recurrence. Any instance of hemoptysis warrants medical evaluation to determine the cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
