In hemangiography, a contrast agent, often ionic or non-ionic iodine-based, is injected into the bloodstream. This contrast agent accumulates in the blood vessels, making them appear on X-ray images taken afterwards. The images produced by hemangiography provide information on the size, shape, and blood flow characteristics of the vessels.

Hemangiography is used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including hemangiomas, arteriovenous malformations, and other vascular abnormalities. It can also be used to guide biopsies or to assess the response of tumors to treatment.

There are different types of hemangiography, including intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA) and dynamic digital subtraction angiography (DDSA). IADSA involves the injection of contrast agent directly into the artery to be imaged, while DDSA records images over time as the contrast agent flows through the vessels.

While hemangiography is considered a useful diagnostic tool, it also carries some risks, including vascular injury, allergic reactions to the contrast agent, and radiation exposure. The development of non-invasive imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and computed tomography angiography (CTA), has also reduced the need for hemangiography in some clinical contexts. However, it remains a valuable tool for diagnosing complex vascular disorders.
