Helotry refers to a state of servitude or semi-servitude. The term originates from the helots of ancient Sparta. Helots were a subjugated population that made up a significant portion of Sparta's citizenry. They were bound to the land and were essentially state-owned serfs. Their primary role was to cultivate the land and provide agricultural produce for the Spartan citizens, freeing them to focus on military training and warfare.

The helots were not slaves in the chattel sense, as they could not be bought or sold individually. However, their lives were tightly controlled, and they faced harsh treatment and regular acts of violence and oppression by the Spartans. The Spartan state routinely engaged in the krypteia, a secret police force that would terrorize and often kill helots to maintain control and prevent rebellion. Despite their subjugated status, helots often outnumbered Spartans, creating a constant underlying tension and fear of uprising within Spartan society.

The existence of helotry was fundamental to the Spartan way of life and its militaristic social structure. The constant need to keep the helots in check heavily influenced Spartan policies and their emphasis on military prowess. Over time, the helot population diminished due to various factors, including warfare, disease, and periodic Spartan purges. Their status eventually faded as Sparta's power declined. The concept of helotry has since been used metaphorically to describe any situation of oppressive servitude or subjugation.
