Helotry
Helotry refers to a state of servitude or semi-servitude. The term originates from the helots of ancient Sparta. Helots were a subjugated population that made up a significant portion of Sparta's citizenry. They were bound to the land and were essentially state-owned serfs. Their primary role was to cultivate the land and provide agricultural produce for the Spartan citizens, freeing them to focus on military training and warfare.
The helots were not slaves in the chattel sense, as they could not be bought or sold
The existence of helotry was fundamental to the Spartan way of life and its militaristic social structure.
