Hellninger refers to a process in glassmaking. It is a term used to describe the annealing of glass, a crucial step in preventing its fracture. Annealing involves controlled heating and cooling of glass to relieve internal stresses that develop during the manufacturing process, such as during shaping or rapid cooling.

The primary purpose of hellninger is to ensure the structural integrity and durability of the glass. When glass cools too quickly after being formed, uneven contraction creates tensile stresses within the material. These stresses make the glass susceptible to breaking, even from minor impacts or temperature changes. Hellninger allows these stresses to dissipate.

In practice, the hellninger process typically involves heating the glass to a specific temperature below its softening point. This temperature is carefully chosen to be high enough to allow the glass molecules to rearrange and relax, but not so high that the glass loses its shape. The glass is then held at this temperature for a period of time, known as the soaking period, to ensure the stresses are evenly distributed.

Following the soaking period, the glass is cooled very slowly and gradually. The rate of cooling is meticulously controlled to prevent the reintroduction of new stresses. This slow cooling allows the glass to contract uniformly, minimizing the development of internal tension.
