Heliumists were a fringe group in the early 20th century who believed that helium gas possessed extraordinary healing properties. Their ideas were largely rooted in pseudoscience and anecdotal evidence, lacking any rigorous scientific backing. Proponents of Heliumism, often referred to as heliumists, claimed that inhaling helium could cure a wide range of ailments, from respiratory problems to more serious diseases. Some even advocated for helium-infused water or baths.

The popularity of Heliumism coincided with the increasing availability and understanding of helium as a distinct element. While the scientific community recognized helium's chemical inertness and its applications in fields like aeronautics and welding, it found no merit in the therapeutic claims of heliumists. Medical professionals largely dismissed these beliefs, pointing to the lack of controlled studies and the fundamental biological implausibility of helium having such effects. Despite widespread skepticism from the medical establishment, some individuals continued to promote Heliumism, often through pamphlets and small publications. The movement eventually faded as scientific understanding advanced and more effective medical treatments became available.
