The heliosfera, or heliosphere, is the vast, bubble-like region of space dominated by the Sun's influence, primarily through the solar wind—a stream of charged particles emitted by the Sun. This boundary extends far beyond the orbit of Pluto, shaping the interaction between the solar system and the interstellar medium. The heliosphere is defined by two key boundaries: the termination shock and the heliopause.

The termination shock is the region where the solar wind slows abruptly due to pressure from the interstellar medium. Beyond this lies the heliosheath, a transitional zone where the solar wind continues to slow and mix with interstellar material. The heliopause marks the outer edge of the heliosphere, where the pressure of the solar wind equals that of the surrounding interstellar gas. Beyond this boundary lies the local interstellar cloud, a region of neutral hydrogen and helium within the Milky Way.

The heliosphere plays a crucial role in protecting the solar system from high-energy cosmic rays. Its magnetic field deflects many of these charged particles, reducing their penetration into the inner solar system. However, some cosmic rays can enter through the heliosphere’s magnetic field lines, particularly near its polar regions. The structure and dynamics of the heliosphere are influenced by solar activity, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which can temporarily alter its shape and boundaries.

Studying the heliosphere provides insights into space weather, which can affect satellites, power grids, and communications on Earth. Missions such as NASA’s Voyager probes and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) have helped map its boundaries and behavior, contributing to our understanding of the Sun’s broader influence in the galaxy. The heliosphere’s study remains an active area of research, as scientists seek to refine models of its formation and long-term stability.
