The term reflects a traditional concept in anthropology and ethnography rather than a modern political entity.

Historically, heimo has been used in Finnish and surrounding Norse and Finnic ethnology to refer to small, kin-based communities that shared ancestry, language, or territory. Membership is typically described through kinship ties, familial lineage, or alliance networks rather than through formal institutions.
