Hegységépítés, also known as mountain building or orogeny, is the process by which large-scale geological structures, such as mountain ranges, are formed. This complex geological phenomenon primarily occurs at convergent plate boundaries where tectonic plates collide. The immense forces generated by these collisions cause the Earth's crust to buckle, fold, and fault, leading to the uplift of land and the creation of elevated terrains.

There are several primary mechanisms involved in mountain building. Orogenic processes can involve the collision of two continental plates, a process called continental-continental collision. This results in intense compression, thickening of the crust, and the formation of extensive fold-and-thrust belts, such as the Himalayas. Another significant process is subduction, where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. If oceanic crust subducts beneath continental crust, it can lead to volcanic mountain ranges along the continental margin, like the Andes. Alternatively, the collision of two oceanic plates can also create volcanic island arcs, which are essentially underwater mountain ranges that can emerge above sea level.

The uplift and deformation associated with mountain building are not instantaneous; they occur over millions of years. Erosion by wind, water, and ice plays a crucial role in shaping mountains once they are formed, gradually wearing them down and creating distinctive landforms like valleys and peaks. The study of mountain building, or orology, provides insights into the dynamic nature of Earth's lithosphere and its history.
