This process begins when pollen, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma, the receptive tip of a carpel. Once the pollen lands on the stigma, it germinates and grows a pollen tube down through the style, a stalk-like structure, towards the ovary. The ovary contains ovules, which house the female gametes, or egg cells. The pollen tube carries the male gametes to the ovule. In flowering plants, a unique double fertilization occurs. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell to form a diploid zygote, which will develop into the embryo. The second male gamete fuses with the central cell of the ovule to form a triploid primary endosperm nucleus, which nourishes the developing embryo.

Following fertilization, the ovule develops into a seed, and the ovary typically matures into a fruit, enclosing and protecting the seed(s). The development of the seed and fruit is essential for the dispersal and propagation of the plant species.
