The term is common in polymer science and electronics, where products such as heat-shrink tubing and heat-shrinkable plastics are designed to shrink when heated. These materials are manufactured in an expanded or pre-stretched state and contract when heated, leveraging a thermal memory in the polymer.

The shrinking process is driven by heating above the material’s shrink temperature, using tools such as a hot air gun, oven, or infrared heater. As the material relaxes from its stretched state, it contracts to a smaller dimension and often forms a secure fit around a substrate. The final size depends on the material’s composition, wall thickness, and the temperature and duration of heating. After cooling, the material remains in its shrunken state without the need for ongoing heat.

Applications of heatshrunk products include electrical insulation and strain relief around cables and connectors, encapsulation of electronic components, protective coverings for medical or aerospace devices, and certain packaging solutions. Some products provide environmental sealing or dielectric protection in addition to mechanical confinement.
