Headrights were a system of land grants used in colonial America, particularly in Virginia and Maryland, during the 17th century. The primary purpose of this system was to attract settlers to the colonies by offering them a financial incentive. Under the headright system, any individual who paid for the passage of a new settler to the colony was granted a specific amount of land. This land grant typically amounted to 50 acres.

The system was designed to encourage the growth of the colonies by increasing the labor force and expanding agricultural production. Wealthy individuals, known as landowners or planters, would often sponsor the passage of indentured servants, thereby acquiring large tracts of land. This led to a significant concentration of land ownership in the hands of a few. While it successfully brought more people to the colonies, it also contributed to the development of a hierarchical society with a distinct planter class. The headright system was eventually phased out as land became scarcer and other methods of land distribution emerged.
