harjastä

Harjastä is a traditional Karelian hat originating from the region of Harjavalta in southwestern Finland and Karelia in Russia. The hat is characterized by its distinctive starch-on-top construction and peaked shape, typically adorned with a flat, flat cap and a leather headband with a clasp.

The harjastä was traditionally worn by men in the region as a working and everyday hat, made from wool or cotton fabrics. Its practical design allowed for a simple method of applying starch to stiffen the brim and crown. This gave the hat a conical shape and a crisp, sharp profile.

Harjastä hats are typically decorated with a button or buckle at the front, and may feature additional ornamentation such as embroidery or simple floral patterns. Some versions of the hat feature enameled metal decorations or ivory settings.

Produced primarily by village craftsmen in the region, the custom of harjastä production largely disappeared with the decline of the rural textile industry in Finland and Russia in the mid-20th century. However, in recent years, some contemporary designers and enthusiasts have started to revive traditional Harjastä production, often incorporating modern materials and occasionally innovative embellishments while staying true to the ancient design and make principle.
