Etymology and scope: The word combines hard, indicating irregularity, with verbe (French for verb). The term is used mainly in specialist literature and some constructed-language discussions; it is not a universally adopted category in mainstream descriptive linguistics.

Morphology and patterns: Common features include vowel ablaut, consonant mutation, or partial suppletion between stems. The present tense and most non-past forms tend to align with a base stem, while past or perfective forms draw on a distinct stem, producing irregular agreement across person and number in some systems. The exact realizations vary by language, but the hallmark is a stable past or perfective stem that is not derivable from the present stem by regular affixation.

Illustrative examples: In a fictional constructed language, the hardverbe ver- meaning “to burn” shows a present stem ver- and a past stem var-, yielding forms such as ver-o, ver-es, ver-et for present and var-o, var-es, var-et for past.
