Hangszalagokkal is the Hungarian word for vocal cords. These are two bands of muscle tissue located in the larynx, or voice box. When we speak, sing, or make other vocal sounds, air from the lungs passes through the larynx, causing the vocal cords to vibrate. This vibration creates the sound waves that our ears perceive as voice.

The pitch of the sound produced by the vocal cords is determined by their tension and thickness. Tighter, thinner vocal cords vibrate faster, producing higher-pitched sounds. Conversely, looser, thicker vocal cords vibrate more slowly, resulting in lower-pitched sounds. The muscles in the larynx can adjust the tension of the vocal cords, allowing for a wide range of pitches.

The quality or timbre of a voice is influenced by the shape of the vocal tract, which includes the throat, mouth, and nasal cavities. These structures act as resonators, modifying the sound produced by the vocal cords. Subtle changes in the position of the tongue, lips, and jaw can alter the resonance and thus the unique quality of an individual's voice.

Problems with the vocal cords can lead to voice disorders, such as hoarseness, loss of voice, or pain during speaking. These issues can be caused by various factors, including overuse, vocal strain, infections, or medical conditions like nodules or polyps on the vocal cords. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve voice rest, therapy, or in some cases, surgery.
