Hammaspyörävaihteet, also known as gears, are mechanical components used to transmit torque and motion between shafts. They consist of interlocking teeth on rotating discs or cylinders. The primary function of a gear train is to change the speed, torque, and direction of rotation. When two gears mesh, the smaller gear (pinion) drives the larger gear (wheel), resulting in a speed reduction and a corresponding torque increase. Conversely, a larger gear driving a smaller gear leads to a speed increase and torque reduction. The ratio of the number of teeth on the meshing gears determines this speed and torque transformation.

Different types of gear teeth profiles exist, such as spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, and worm gears, each suited for specific applications and load conditions. Spur gears are the simplest and most common, with teeth cut parallel to the axis of rotation. Helical gears have teeth cut at an angle, providing smoother and quieter operation and allowing for higher load capacities. Bevel gears are used to transmit motion between shafts that intersect at an angle, typically 90 degrees. Worm gears are used for significant speed reductions and often involve a screw-like gear (worm) meshing with a wheel.

Gearboxes, which are assemblies of multiple gear trains, are used in a wide range of machinery, from simple hand tools to complex industrial equipment and vehicles, enabling precise control over power transmission. They are essential for optimizing performance, efficiency, and functionality in numerous mechanical systems.
