Halogeneeilimput, also known as halogen lamps or quartz-halogen lamps, are a type of incandescent light bulb that utilizes a halogen gas to improve their lifespan and performance. In a standard incandescent bulb, the tungsten filament evaporates over time, depositing on the inside of the glass bulb and causing the filament to thin and eventually break. Halogen lamps overcome this limitation by introducing a small amount of halogen gas, such as iodine or bromine, into the bulb.

The presence of the halogen gas creates a regenerative cycle known as the halogen cycle. When the tungsten filament heats up, tungsten atoms evaporate. These tungsten atoms then react with the halogen gas to form a tungsten halide compound. This compound circulates within the bulb. When the tungsten halide comes into contact with the hot filament, the high temperature causes it to decompose, redepositing the tungsten back onto the filament. This process effectively “recycles” the tungsten, preventing its premature evaporation and thus extending the life of the bulb.

Halogen lamps produce a whiter, brighter light compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. They also operate at higher filament temperatures, contributing to their improved luminous efficacy. However, they generate more heat and are generally more expensive to produce. Halogen lamps are commonly used in applications where high-quality light and long life are desired, such as in automotive headlights, stage lighting, and some residential lighting fixtures. They require a clear quartz glass envelope due to the high operating temperatures and the need to contain the halogen gas.
