Halogénekre refers to the halogens, a group of chemical elements in the periodic table. These elements are fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At). They are located in Group 17 of the periodic table. Halogens are highly reactive nonmetals.

In their elemental form, halogens exist as diatomic molecules, meaning they consist of two atoms bonded together (e.g., F₂, Cl₂, Br₂). They have seven valence electrons, making them eager to gain one electron to achieve a stable electron configuration. This strong tendency to accept electrons is what makes them so reactive.

Halogens readily form salts with alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, which is how they acquired their name. "Halogen" comes from Greek words meaning "salt-former." For example, sodium chloride (NaCl), common table salt, is formed from the reaction of sodium (an alkali metal) and chlorine (a halogen).

Fluorine is the most electronegative and reactive element. As you move down the group from fluorine to astatine, reactivity and electronegativity decrease, while atomic radius and melting/boiling points generally increase.

Halogens have diverse applications. Chlorine is used in water purification and the production of plastics. Fluorine is found in toothpaste and refrigerants. Bromine is used in flame retardants and pharmaceuticals. Iodine is essential for thyroid function and used as an antiseptic. Astatine is radioactive and rare, with limited applications.
