Haloarchaeal is an adjective relating to haloarchaea, a group of extremely halophilic archaea within the phylum Euryarchaeota. Members of this group are adapted to high-salt environments and typically require large NaCl concentrations (roughly 1.5 to 5 M) for growth. They are found in natural hypersaline waters such as salt lakes, salterns, and brine pools, as well as in salted foods and industrial brines.
Haloarchaea are usually rod- or coccoid-shaped and often display pink to red coloration due to carotenoid pigments.
