Halmazállapotok, often translated as states of matter, refer to the distinct physical forms that matter can exist in. The most common and fundamental states are solid, liquid, and gas. These states are differentiated by the arrangement and movement of the particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) that make up the substance.

In a solid, particles are tightly packed in a fixed, ordered structure. They vibrate in place but do not move past each other. This gives solids a definite shape and volume.

In a liquid, particles are still relatively close together but are not fixed in position. They can slide past one another, allowing liquids to flow and take the shape of their container. Liquids maintain a definite volume.

In a gas, particles are far apart and move randomly and rapidly. They collide with each other and the walls of their container. Gases have no definite shape or volume and will expand to fill any container they occupy.

Transitions between these states, such as melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), vaporization (liquid to gas), and condensation (gas to liquid), occur when energy is added or removed from the substance, typically in the form of heat. These changes are accompanied by changes in temperature, pressure, and volume. Other states of matter exist, such as plasma, which is an ionized gas, and Bose-Einstein condensate, but solid, liquid, and gas are the most frequently encountered.
