Hakkapeliitat were Finnish light cavalrymen who served in the Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The name "hakkapeliitta" is derived from their battle cry, "Hakkaa päälle!" which translates to "Hack them down!" or "Chop them up!". These skilled horsemen were renowned for their daring tactics and ferocity in combat.

Recruited primarily from the Savonia region of Finland, hakkapeliitat were known for their distinctive weaponry, including the saber, pistols, and a short cavalry sword. They often fought in squadrons, employing a tactic known as the "caracole," a rolling volley fire where cavalrymen would ride forward in succession, fire their pistols, and then withdraw to reload while the next group advanced.
