Hajusüsteemides refer to distributed systems in Estonian. A distributed system is a collection of independent computers that appears to its users as a single coherent system. These computers communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages to one another. The components of a distributed system can be spread out geographically, or they can be located on the same network.

The primary goal of distributed systems is to achieve resource sharing, fault tolerance, and scalability. Resource sharing allows multiple users to access and utilize shared resources like printers, files, or processing power. Fault tolerance means that the system can continue to operate even if some of its components fail. Scalability allows the system to handle an increasing amount of work by adding more resources.

Examples of distributed systems include the internet, cloud computing platforms, peer-to-peer networks, and large-scale databases. Designing and managing distributed systems presents unique challenges. These include dealing with concurrency, where multiple operations happen simultaneously, ensuring consistency of data across different nodes, handling network latency and failures, and managing the complexity of distributed algorithms.

Various architectural models are used in distributed systems, such as client-server, peer-to-peer, and tiered architectures. The choice of architecture depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as performance, reliability, and cost. Research in distributed systems continues to focus on improving performance, security, and the management of increasingly complex and large-scale systems.
