A haihduttaja, or evaporator, is a piece of industrial equipment used to remove solvent from a solution through evaporation. This process is commonly employed in chemical engineering, food processing, and pharmaceuticals to concentrate solutions or recover valuable solids. The fundamental principle involves heating the solution, which increases the vapor pressure of the solvent, causing it to transition into a gaseous state. This vapor is then typically condensed and collected separately from the concentrated product.

There are several types of evaporators, each suited to different applications and solution properties. Common designs include forced-circulation evaporators, where the liquid is pumped through heat exchangers; falling-film evaporators, where the liquid flows down heated tubes; and wiped-film evaporators, used for viscous or heat-sensitive materials. The choice of evaporator depends on factors such as the solution's viscosity, tendency to scale, boiling point elevation, and heat sensitivity. Energy efficiency is a key consideration in evaporator design, with multi-effect evaporators and mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) being common methods to reduce steam consumption.
