The habenulae are a pair of small nuclei in the dorsal diencephalon, forming part of the epithalamus. They are divided into medial and lateral habenula, each with distinct connections and functions. Located near the third ventricle, above the thalamus and in proximity to the pineal gland, the habenulae receive input from limbic and basal ganglia regions via the stria medullaris thalami. They also receive modulatory input from other brain areas and project to brainstem and midbrain structures, forming a relay between forebrain networks and monoaminergic systems.
