Haarniskaa is the Finnish term used to refer to armor, the protective equipment worn to defend a wearer from weapons. The word haarniska has deep roots in Germanic languages and entered Finnish through historical contact with medieval European military culture. Haarniskaa, as a grammatical form, appears in sentences when referring to “some armor” or the armor in general.

Historically, haarniskae encompassed a range of protective systems. Common components included a torso protector (cuirass), a helmet, arm and leg defenses, and gauntlets. Materials varied from leather and bronze to iron and steel, and armor evolved through several styles, such as scale, lamellar, chain mail, and, in Western Europe, full plate.
