Symbolical is an adjective meaning relating to or constituting a symbol, or to the act of symbolization itself. In modern English, symbolic is far more common; symbolical is mainly encountered in older writings or in certain technical or historical contexts.

The word derives from Latin symbolicus and Greek symbolikos, from symbolon, a token or sign, with the suffix -ical (or -ic). The spelling variant symbolical has appeared since Early Modern English.

Usage and context: In philosophy, theology, and literary criticism, symbolical can emphasize the interpretive or representational function of symbols. In logic and mathematics, however, the standard term is symbolic logic, referring to the formal study of reasoning with symbols; historically some authors also used symbolical logic. In everyday use, symbolical imagery or gestures are those that serve as signs loaded with meaning beyond their literal form, though most modern writers would simply say symbolic imagery.

Symbolical remains a valid historical or stylistic variant but is rare in contemporary prose. When clarity is required, prefer symbolic or the specific phrase symbolical logic only if quoting or preserving historical diction.
