Gobolysejtek is a Hungarian term that translates to "goblet cells" in English. These are specialized epithelial cells found lining various mucous membranes throughout the body. Their primary function is to secrete mucin, a glycoprotein that, when hydrated, forms mucus. This mucus plays a crucial role in lubrication, protection, and trapping foreign particles.

Goblet cells are particularly abundant in the respiratory tract, where the mucus they produce helps to humidify inhaled air and trap dust, pathogens, and other debris. This trapped material is then moved upwards by cilia, a process called mucociliary clearance, and eventually cleared from the airways. In the digestive system, goblet cells in the intestinal lining secrete mucus that lubricates the passage of food, protects the underlying epithelium from mechanical damage and digestive enzymes, and contributes to the gut barrier.

The appearance of goblet cells is distinctive. They are typically taller than the surrounding epithelial cells and have a characteristic goblet or wine-glass shape. The apical (top) portion of the cell is filled with secretory granules containing mucin, which appears clear or lightly stained under a microscope. Upon stimulation, these granules fuse with the cell membrane and release their contents to form mucus. The density and distribution of goblet cells can vary depending on the specific tissue and its physiological requirements. Changes in goblet cell number or function can be indicative of various pathological conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and inflammatory bowel diseases.
