Creams are semi-solid emulsions, usually with a higher water content than ointments. Gels are semi-solid systems where a liquid phase is constrained within a three-dimensional network. Suppositories are solid dosage forms inserted into body orifices, where they melt or dissolve to release the API.

In addition to these, parenteral dosage forms such as injections and infusions are designed for administration directly into the bloodstream or tissues, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. Transdermal patches deliver medication through the skin over an extended period.
