Gyújtótekercsek, also known as ignition coils, are essential components in spark-ignited internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to transform the low voltage from a vehicle's battery into the high voltage necessary to create a spark at the spark plug. This spark ignites the fuel-air mixture within the engine's cylinders, causing combustion and driving the engine.

A typical ignition coil consists of two windings of wire wrapped around a common iron core. The primary winding has relatively few turns of thick wire, while the secondary winding has many thousands of turns of thin wire. When a low voltage current flows through the primary winding, it creates a magnetic field. When this current is suddenly interrupted, the magnetic field collapses rapidly. This collapse induces a very high voltage in the secondary winding, which is then transmitted to the spark plug.

Modern vehicles often employ individual ignition coils for each cylinder, known as coil-on-plug (COP) systems. This design eliminates the need for spark plug wires and can improve engine performance and fuel efficiency by providing a more precise spark to each cylinder. Older systems might use a distributor to send the high voltage from a single coil to the appropriate spark plug. Issues with gyújtótekercsek can lead to misfires, rough idling, poor acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.
