Guruchela, often spelled guru-chela, is a term used to describe the traditional teacher–disciple relationship in Indian spiritual traditions. The word combines guru, meaning the spiritual guide, with chela, meaning student or follower. The concept centers on guidance, transmission of practice, and personal growth on the path to realization.

In many lineages the guru is responsible for transmitting teachings, initiating the chela into practices, and guiding the disciple’s progress. Initiation (diksha) may involve blessing, mantra transmission, and introduction to a specific practice or path. The chela undertakes disciplined practice, service, and adherence to the guru’s instructions and ethical norms. The relationship is often regarded as sacred and transformative, with the guru serving as a conduit for tradition and insight.

The guru–chela bond is frequently connected to a broader concept of lineage, or parampara, which preserves a sequence of teachings across generations. Traditions differ in emphasis: in Advaita Vedanta, the guru helps the student realize non-dual awareness; in Bhakti traditions, devotion to the guru complements devotion to the divine; in tantric and some yoga lineages, the guru may authorize advanced practices and rites.

Ethical considerations are central, as the dynamic can be powerful. Modern discussions stress consent, boundaries, and accountability to prevent abuse of authority, while recognizing the enduring value of a skilled, compassionate guiding figure in many spiritual communities.

The term and practice have influenced many Hindu, Buddhist, and global yoga communities, where the mentor–disciple model remains a common framework for transmitting knowledge and personal transformation.
