Gravitaxis refers to the directional movement of an organism in response to gravity. This phenomenon is also known as gravikinesis or graviotropism. It is a form of taxis, which is a directed movement in response to a stimulus. Organisms that exhibit gravitaxis can move either with gravity (positive gravitaxis) or against gravity (negative gravitaxis).

Positive gravitaxis is commonly observed in sessile organisms like plants, where roots grow downwards, following the pull of gravity. This ensures the roots anchor the plant and reach water and nutrients in the soil. In some motile organisms, positive gravitaxis can aid in reaching a stable position or a specific depth in a fluid environment.

Negative gravitaxis is seen in organisms that move upwards, away from the gravitational pull. Plant shoots and leaves exhibit negative gravitaxis, growing towards sunlight for photosynthesis. Some microorganisms and plankton also display negative gravitaxis, allowing them to stay near the surface of water bodies where light is abundant.

The mechanisms underlying gravitaxis involve specialized sensory structures or cellular components that detect gravitational forces. In plants, statoliths, dense organelles within specialized cells called statocytes, are thought to play a key role by settling in response to gravity and triggering cellular signals that influence growth direction. In some microorganisms, the distribution of cellular components or the presence of specific receptors can mediate their response to gravity. Gravitaxis is crucial for the orientation, development, and survival of many organisms across diverse environments.
