gp3

gp3 is an AWS Elastic Block Store (EBS) volume type for general-purpose SSD storage. Introduced in 2020 to replace gp2, gp3 lets users provision IOPS and throughput independently of volume size, enabling predictable performance and potential cost savings for a wide range of workloads.

Performance characteristics include a baseline of 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s, with the option to provision up to 16,000 IOPS and 1,000 MB/s. This separation of capacity and performance lets you tailor throughput without increasing storage capacity.

Pricing: gp3 uses a fixed per-GB storage price plus separate charges for IOPS and throughput provisioned, often reducing costs relative to gp2 for similar workloads.

Common use cases are boot volumes, development and test environments, and small to medium databases or latency-sensitive applications. gp3 supports encryption at rest, EBS Snapshots, and straightforward migration from gp2 by changing the volume type.

gp3 is available in most AWS regions and integrates with standard EC2 and EBS tooling, offering durability and flexible scaling for general-purpose storage needs.
