It is the process of quantifying glucose concentration in blood or other bodily fluids and is essential for diagnosing and managing diabetes, as well as for metabolic research.

Measurement methods include finger-prick capillary testing with handheld meters, laboratory plasma glucose assays, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with subcutaneous sensors that report interstitial glucose levels. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) uses serial measurements after ingestion of a glucose solution to assess glucose handling.

Results are reported in mg/dL or mmol/L. Home glucose meters typically display mg/dL, while clinical and scientific settings use mmol/L. Interpretation depends on timing relative to meals, activity, and therapy, and targets vary between individuals and clinical guidelines.

Accuracy and limitations: meters vary in accuracy and can be affected by user technique, temperature, hematocrit, and test-strip quality. CGMs provide continuous data but measure interstitial glucose, which can lag behind blood glucose during rapid changes. Calibration and quality-control procedures are commonly required.

Glucose measurement supports routine diabetes management, pharmacologic adjustments, diagnostic screening for diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance, and monitoring in critical care and research. Advances in sensor technology and data integration continue to improve usability and interpretation.
