Glomerulusspecific is an adjective used in nephrology and molecular biology to denote something that is specific to, enriched in, or characteristic of the glomerulus, the tuft of capillaries forming the filtering unit of the nephron. The term is used primarily in descriptions of proteins, transcripts, cell populations, or imaging agents that show predominant or exclusive association with glomerular structures.

Research approaches such as laser capture microdissection of glomeruli, single-cell RNA sequencing, and proteomics are used to identify glomerulusspecific components, separating glomerular signals from those of tubules and interstitium.

Well-characterized glomerulus-related proteins include podocyte slit-diaphragm components such as nephrin (NPHS1) and podocin (NPHS2), which are enriched in podocytes and often cited as indicators of glomerular integrity. Other glomerulus-associated factors include WT1, a key transcription factor in glomerular development, and synaptopodin, a podocyte cytoskeletal protein.

In pathology and diagnostics, glomerulus-associated markers are used in immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to evaluate glomerular pathology, identify podocyte injury, and assist differential diagnosis of glomerular diseases.

Limitations include that true glomerulus-specific markers are uncommon; many candidates are enriched in the glomerulus but expressed elsewhere as well. Expression can vary with developmental stage, species, and disease state, so context is essential when interpreting glomerulus-specific signals.
