Glikogenowa is a Polish adjective derived from glikogen (glycogen) and is used to describe things related to glycogen, the storage form of glucose in living organisms. In biochemistry and medicine, the term can be applied to structures, processes, or conditions associated with glycogen metabolism.

Glycogen is a large, highly branched polysaccharide composed of glucose units. It serves as a rapid source of glucose during fasting or increased energy demand. The glucose units are mainly linked by α-1,4 glycosidic bonds along linear chains, with branches created by α-1,6 linkages at frequent intervals. The liver and skeletal muscle are the primary tissues that store glycogen, though the two tissues use it for different purposes: liver glycogen helps maintain blood glucose levels, while muscle glycogen provides fuel for muscle activity.

Biosynthesis and breakdown of glycogen are tightly regulated. Glycogen synthesis (glycogenesis) is driven by the enzyme glycogen synthase, supported by branching enzyme to create the α-1,6 branches. Glycogen breakdown (glycogenolysis) involves glycogen phosphorylase and a debranching enzyme that allows glucose to be released as glucose-1-phosphate and, after conversion, as free glucose in the liver. Hormonal and allosteric signals regulate these pathways: insulin promotes glycogenesis, while glucagon and epinephrine stimulate glycogenolysis through signaling cascades such as the cAMP-PKA pathway. Calcium signals also influence glycogen metabolism in muscle cells during contraction.

Clinically, abnormalities in glycogen metabolism underlie glycogen storage diseases (glikogenozy), a group of inherited disorders affecting glycogen synthesis or degradation. Examples include Pompe disease, von Gierke disease, and McArdle disease, each caused by specific enzyme defects and presenting with tissue-specific symptoms. Diagnosis relies on enzyme assays, genetic testing, and metabolic evaluations, while treatment focuses on managing symptoms and metabolic control.
