geçirgenity

Geçirgenity is a coined term used primarily in Turkish-language discussions to describe the quality of a material or system that permits the passage of substances, energy, or signals. It is related to the Turkish word geçirgenlik, which means permeability, and, in English usage, may be read as permeativity. The term is not yet a standard entry in formal glossaries and is encountered mainly in Turkish-language discussions and some cross-disciplinary writings.

The concept covers both the rate at which something can pass through a boundary or medium and the selectivity with which different species are transmitted. As a broad notion, geçirgenity encompasses phenomena such as gas or liquid diffusion through membranes, water flow through porous rocks, and the transmission of photons or electrons through materials.

Measurement and interpretation of geçirgenity rely on separate but connected properties. Permeability describes how readily a substance can pass, while diffusivity, permeance, and selectivity describe how quickly and preferentially different species move. Commonly reported metrics include flux, diffusion coefficients, and permeability coefficients, with units and conventions varying by discipline. Real systems often exhibit trade-offs between high permeability and high selectivity, influenced by factors such as pore size distribution, tortuosity, temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility.

Applications span water treatment membranes, gas separations, fuel cells, drug delivery systems, and geotechnical contexts like hydrogeology. Engineers and scientists use the concept to compare materials, optimize processes, and model transport phenomena, while researchers may treat geçirgenity as an overarching idea that unites permeability, diffusion, and selectivity under a single descriptor.
