Geographic linguistics, also known as linguistic geography or geolinguistics, is the study of how language varies across space and how geographic factors shape linguistic behavior and change. It covers the distribution of phonological, lexical, syntactic, and discourse features across regions, communities, and social groups, and seeks to explain why language patterns differ and spread over distance.

The field relies on methods such as dialect surveys, linguistic atlases, and isogloss mapping, often complemented by geographic information systems (GIS), spatial statistics, and corpus analysis. Researchers analyze dialect continua, boundaries, and areal features that transcend political borders, and explore language contact phenomena like borrowing, convergence in sprachbunds, and code-switching.
