Gensegmenten are discrete DNA segments that contribute to the structure and function of genes. In many genes, coding regions are divided into exons, which encode the amino acid sequence or functional RNA, and introns, which are removed during RNA processing. Some genes also consist of multiple functional segments that can be rearranged or differentially spliced to yield alternative products. The term is commonly used in genetics and molecular biology to describe these modular parts of a gene or gene family.

A prominent context for gensegmenten is the adaptive immune system. The genes that encode antibodies and T-cell receptors contain large repertoires of variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) segments. These segments are organized in clusters in the genome and are not continuously coding in the germline. During lymphocyte development, somatic recombination, mediated by the RAG1 and RAG2 enzymes, brings together one V segment, often one or more D segments, and one J segment to form a complete variable region of the receptor gene. This rearrangement, along with junctional diversity introduced at the joining sites, generates a vast diversity of antigen-binding specificities from a relatively small set of gene segments. The resulting rearranged genes are then expressed as part of B cell receptors or T cell receptors.

Gensegment diversity thus underpins both general gene architecture and the specialized immune functions in vertebrates. Errors in recombination can lead to nonfunctional receptors or, in some cases, immunological disorders or malignancies.
