Genmerkmal is a term used in biology and genetics to denote a hereditary characteristic or trait encoded, at least in part, by genes within an organism’s genome. The word combines Gen, referring to a gene, and Merkmal, meaning feature or trait. In practice, a genmerkmal can refer to any observable or measurable trait with a genetic component, including morphological, physiological, biochemical, or behavioral features.

Inheritance of genmerkmal is understood through genotypes and phenotypes. A trait may follow classic Mendelian patterns when controlled by a single gene with distinct alleles, but many traits are polygenic and influenced by multiple genes as well as environmental factors.
