Gelijkspanningsladen, also known as DC charging, is a method for rapidly replenishing the battery of an electric vehicle. Unlike alternating current (AC) charging, which relies on the vehicle's onboard charger to convert AC to DC, DC charging bypasses this internal conversion process. Instead, the charging station itself contains a powerful rectifier that converts AC power from the grid into direct current (DC) before it even reaches the vehicle. This DC power is then directly supplied to the vehicle's battery management system, allowing for significantly faster charging speeds.

The primary advantage of gelijkspanningsladen is its speed. Because the conversion to DC happens outside the vehicle, larger amounts of power can be delivered to the battery, reducing charging times from hours to minutes in many cases. This makes it ideal for situations where quick turnarounds are necessary, such as along highways or at public charging hubs. The equipment required for DC charging is more complex and expensive than that for AC charging, typically involving substantial infrastructure for power conversion and cooling.

Gelijkspanningsladen is often referred to as "fast charging" or "rapid charging." The power output of DC chargers can vary widely, from around 50 kW to over 350 kW, with higher power ratings enabling even faster charging of compatible electric vehicles. The specific charging rate also depends on the vehicle's battery capacity, its maximum charging rate, and the current state of charge.
