Gatejännitteellä is a Finnish term that translates to "gate voltage" in English. It refers to the electrical potential applied to the gate terminal of a field-effect transistor (FET). This voltage controls the conductivity of the channel between the source and drain terminals.

In a Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET), the gate electrode is insulated from the semiconductor channel by a thin layer of oxide. When a gate voltage is applied, it creates an electric field that either attracts or repels charge carriers in the channel. This modulation of charge carriers alters the channel's resistance, thereby controlling the current flow from source to drain.

The gate voltage can be either positive or negative, depending on the type of FET. For an n-channel enhancement-mode MOSFET, a positive gate voltage above a certain threshold voltage (Vth) will create a conductive n-type channel. For a p-channel enhancement-mode MOSFET, a negative gate voltage below a threshold voltage will create a conductive p-type channel. Depletion-mode FETs behave differently, with a channel existing at zero gate voltage and the gate voltage used to reduce its conductivity.
