Gastroösofageale sleet (GOS) is a medical term referring to the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. This condition is commonly known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when it becomes chronic or causes complications. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular ring at the junction between the esophagus and stomach, normally prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. When this sphincter weakens or relaxes inappropriately, acid reflux occurs.
